Brought to you by CILIP and GLL.

The course provides a comprehensive introduction to public libraries, looking first at the fascinating history of their development and then moving on to consider public libraries as they are now – how they are managed, how they are delivered, what they are expected to do and how they perform. The third section will consider the future of public libraries: the recent change of Prime Minister has resulted in a change of priorities, and the public libraries strategy, originally scheduled for publication in June 2026, is now being rewritten. We will write our own strategy during the final session of the course, having considered government strategies which impact libraries. Participants will choose from a number of options, deciding how libraries could move forward from a focus on providing books and access to PCs and encompassing developments such as mental health centres and banking hubs."
This course is designed for all staff working in public libraries and is particularly suited to newcomers and those who want to refresh their knowledge.

Learning objectives

•    Increase your understanding of the history of public libraries
•    Identify and discuss key issues with public libraries now
•    Consider future opportunities for public libraries

The training day schedule will be available shortly.

Meet the trainer

Diana Edmonds is an experienced manager of public libraries. She established GLL’s Libraries Division in 2011 and secured contracts to manage library services in five public library services: three in London (Bromley, Greenwich and Wandsworth) Dudley in the West Midlands and the County of Lincolnshire in the East Midlands.
Diana has a strong track record of increasing the use of public libraries, attracting more visitors and issuing more books and genuinely placing libraries at the heart of their communities. Diana is currently working as a consultant, in both the library and publishing sectors.
